EDIT/EDT {file}
Common commands:
T W
T 20-344
I
I;string
C
E
Q
F "target"
^Z
etc.
EDT line mode. Heinous, hideous, horrible, but enough to get the
OpenVMS system going far enough for a remote network login to fix the
rest of the particular mess.
And I'd get IP networking installed and going first, and then connect
in remotely and work on the DECwindows and related settings.
The EDT help text is missing some of the common operations, but the
above subset of commands should be enough to edit what you need to get
OpenVMS going, licenses registered, etc.
Yes, the serial console from a terminal or terminal emulator (or
remotely via a terminal server) is a common path around this particular
OpenVMS UI minefield.
There's more than a little room for improvement here. This particular
mess isn't ever going to get fixed, though. VAX is too far gone.
The VT52 glass TTY mode present in some graphics drivers came later,
not that the glass TTY VT52 mode actually addressed the underlying
issues here.
Needing to use a variant mode in an archaic text editor just to get a
base configuration going is... not optimal.
