Hoff, the BA356 is indeed somewhat different. A split bus on the AS1200 splits the bus in the middle. In a regular set up you get DKB0: up to DKB600:. In a split bus this becomes DKB0: to DKB300: (top 4 disks) and DKC0: to DKC200: (lower disks). 
I had the cable configuration right. All that was needed was a change in one jumper. 
Thanks for the manual pointer,  I have a couple of those as well.
