I'll second this perspective.
While I can kind of understand some of the animosity
towards Unix, I really don't see how an API derived from
the essence of VMS would have been any simpler, clearer
or more straightforward.

and impose a complexity on the end user that isn't really
necessary.
POSIX is about as simple as you can get while also keeping
some sort of truce towards something resembling cross
platform support.
