There are a lot of very nice keyboards available, David.  Just not 
usually from the cheapest of vendors, and also seldom the keyboards 
included with a system purchase.

Cherry—and Matias, Apple and other vendors—are making their own key 
switches, in addition to offering keyboards.  Different switches, 
different feel, different loudness, and with different prices, too.

While some were pretty good, other DEC keyboards were probably most 
charitably called muddy.   Cherry made some of the LK keyboards.
