   I'm not sure, in terms of the time scale that you are thinking about,
   but I recall large subsystems inside VMS re-written from Macro-32 to
   BLISS between the VMS 2.x and VMS 4.x timeframes.

   And then there was the buggy rewrite of VMS mail into C.
