In the absence of an affordable bulk eraser, cartridge leader destruction will be the alternate plan.

It's not a perfect method, but it makes it an order of magnitude more difficult to return the remaining tape to a readable state in a drive.

Someone attempting to do so would need a stock of replacement leaders, tape splicing equipment plus materials and a lot of patience.

Of course, there is the small matter that working examples of the various kinds of drives are being increasingly rare.
