Not a big deal, but you might want to be a bit more careful about
reporting the VMS version; V8.1-1H1 does not exist.

Perhaps it's V8.3-1H1?  Or V8.2-1?

Can you perform any DEFRAG commands on that device, like
DEFRAG SHOW <dev name> /VOLUME ?

There were changes made to DEFRAG to support 2TB devices, but I think V3.0 has 
those changes, and your 600GB device is well short of that, in any event.
