Heating elements in the battery modules.  When you "boot" the car in
cold weather initial autonomy may be bad, but as batteries warm up (and
the act of using power also warms up batteries) autonomy increases back
to normal.

(If the car remains plugged in overnight, I assume batteries are kept warm)

It could be because your conventional lead acid batteries were affected
by the cold.
