I think I heard there was a disagreement between HP and Kednos about who
should invest the resources to make the compiler work on Itanium. There
is not likely anything about x86_64 that would make that disagreement go
away. And of course rewriting it to use LLVM or some other back end
would be even more work than adapting it to a newer version of GEM.

There was at least one very big customer (maybe Volkswagen?). No idea if
they are still running Alpha or switched to something else.
