"DECnet for Macintosh Pathworks for Macintosh Users Guide Jan91" says it
is possible to do this from VMS:

"You can use the DCL COpy command to back up any or all of the
files on the remote Macintosh to a specially created directory on
the VAX.
$ COpy node"username password":: device: [directory ... ] ; 999
destination-file"

On the Mac OS 9 side I created a folder called "Public" and enabled
sharing on it for owner (username "DECNET", password "SECRET"), as well
as group and guests with full read-write access.

Expecting at least the owner userid/password should work. But neither of
these are working.

$ dir macos9"DECNET SECRET"::[...]*.*
%DIRECT-E-OPENIN, error opening MACOS9"DECNET password"::[...]*.*;* as input
-RMS-E-FND, ACP file or directory lookup failed
-SYSTEM-F-INVLOGIN, login information invalid at remote node

$ dir macos9::[...]*.*
%DIRECT-E-OPENIN, error opening MACOS9::[...]*.*;* as input
-RMS-E-FND, ACP file or directory lookup failed
-SYSTEM-F-INVLOGIN, login information invalid at remote node

Any idea what credentials Pathworks for Macintosh is expecting?
