   Not really.  As I recall (and it's been a _long_ time
since I powered one up), a MicroVAX II would fail if the
colon _was_ specified.  Later models didn't care.

   I believe that that should be interpreted as, "I can't
find the file I sought on device DKA300."  A better message
would have revealed the [dir]name.type of that file.

   Pretty much by definition, unless the default boot flags
are inappropriate/hosed.
