It was really big in patient records where vast quantities of not easy to categorize text data, such as doctors orders, needed to be recorded and researchable. I have no idea if that is the case in a post electronic records mandate world. I would ass-u-me so, but, I don't know enough about NoSQL databases to know if they could fully replace Mumps.

VA Vista was released to the public domain because it was done on the
taxpayers dime. It has been adapted to doctors offices, hospitals,
even vet clinics.

Ever heard of a EMR called Epic? It's also written in ANSI-M (the
correct name for MUMPS today!) Claims are it was written from scratch
but I have my doubts. It seemed to come into being as a full-blown
product in a really short time making me think it may also have its
roots in Vista.

But, in any event it is ANSI-M.

Ever heard of Intersystems Cache? Yep, ANSI-M. With applications not
only in Medical but also in Financials and Government.

Maybe VMS should be working at re-attracting the ANSI-M/MUMPS world.
