Loosing people happen all the time.
The only reason for this being a story is that it is
political sensitive.
But the project could have lost him for many other reasons:
he could have been run over by a bus, hen could have gotten
an offer he could not resist from Microsoft, he could have
decided to become a buddhist monk in Thailand.
The project impact would have been the same. But noone
would have been interested (except those that actually
knew him).

I don't see why.
Apple like the product.
Most likely the project will continue as is without
Apple doing anything.
Maybe the project will reach out to Apple and ask them
to provide a few people to help the project. Which
Apple could do without any problems.
It would be cheaper for them to provide those people
than to even do the analysis of the consequences of a
major change in the compiler strategy.
