HPE is slimming down drastically. Its not just OpenVMS that HPE no longer considers a strategic product
In the last 18 months, HP has:
- outsourced WW Cust service
- sold off WW Software unit
- sold off WW Managed Services (outsourcing)
All of these are major divisions and major $'s. I suspect HP-UX and NonStop will soon undergo a transition to partner companies in a way very similar to the vey successful OpenVMS transition to VSI model.
Imho, the reason for this slimming down is that HPE is getting ready to be acquired by someone (my bet is one of the Asian companies).
It’s a very logical move by HPE to further slim down by moving their OpenVMS support to VSI.
For VSI, it reduces confusion, and simplifies licensing, documentation, patching, customer programs and at the same time will significantly increase the number of customers that VSI is supporting. Read more annual revenue.
For HPE OpenVMS support resources transitioning to VSI, they go from a very, very small fish in a large HPE organization that does not view OpenVMS as a strategic product to an organization that only has one product - OpenVMS.
For HPE, it further aligns itself to the desires of whoever is planning to acquire the company. This Prod/Organization slimming down is the same longer term strategy that Digital did in the 2 years before the Compaq merger (acquisition).
