This is probably a conflation between the Intel VLIW work that produced
the i860 architecture in 1989, and the slightly later work that became
known as Itanium.

Then-HP started work on a potential PA-RISC replacement in 1989 and on
what later became known as EPIC, and which became Intel Itanium.

Wouldn't surprise me to learn that some parts of what Intel learned
from their i860 VLIW work was reused with EPIC and Itanium, but what
became Intel Itanium arose from then-HP.
