Since "helping the community" implied no pay, then if that
is why they did it, then not being paid is not being misled.

They understood how it worked and they decided to do it
anyway.

Their choice.

To be misled someone must have promised them something that
was not delivered.

Most open source licenses has not changed or has changed very little
for 20-30 years.

The companies that you mention have actually contributed a lot as
companies. Redhat was #1 contributing for several years until
Intel took over that spot.

And the money they earn is not made for selling software licenses
(unless the dual GPL commercial license cases). They money they
make is for support.

Big Bank Inc. pays Redhat for support. Redhat pays its employees
that take the calls from Big Bank Inc..

The original developer of the code does not expect to
get a cut of that support money. Because that is not how
it has been working so far - and does not
even make sense (they did not provide the support
service).
