The target market for VSI OpenVMS for the foreseeable future is the
OpenVMS installed base. Past that, the target markets will shift into
updates and products and qualifications for newer apps and newer
deployments. But that's all some years into the future, and only after
VSI has a viable port to x86-64 and has acquired a stable base of
OpenVMS customers and can begin to identify and support development
efforts toward wholly-new apps and wholly-new deployments.
The easiest sale for VSI is the existing OpenVMS customer. VSI doesn't
yet have a compelling case for new deployments. The x86-64 port is
part of that. There's far more work past the x86-64 port, and VSI will
then be casting around for folks that are willing to pay for OpenVMS
for ports of their own existing apps and for folks that are interested
in using OpenVMS as the basis for new deployments. But that whole
target market for VSI? For now, it's the installed base of OpenVMS
users.
Where VSI goes with OpenVMS past that? I'd tend to doubt that the
folks at VSI have more than a few very general thoughts and some very
rough ideas about that, as it's getting the installed base to buy VSI
contracts and getting OpenVMS ported to x86-64 to be able to sustain
those revenues past the end of HPE Integrity servers and Itanium
processors. And VSI is flat out busy with building their customer base
and getting the x86-64 port out the door.
Because for now, it's all about the base.
