The 8.3 file name limit is pretty irrelevant in this thread. Why people
continue discussing it?

If you have an issue with them, just set the limit to 1, and you'll
never have to purge. Others think they are an essential feature and
systems without them suck. Different people, different needs and
opinions. But it's not that you can't get VMS to give you what you like.
