And it's not only graphics cards. Sometimes even the most basic devices
have heavily restricted programming information.

For example, try finding any freely available programming documentation
for the FTDI or Prolific USB serial ports themselves instead of some
OS specific device driver supplied by the vendor.

Yes, that's right, USB serial ports... :-(
