Somewhat more than century ago each town had his own time based on the
position of the sun, but because of the railways the coupling with the
position of the sun was broken. Larger regions coordinated their times. Now
that airplanes are becoming common, and the speed of communication has
increased so much it might be time for the next step. Why don't we stop all
those different time zones. If the whole world would be on UTC,
communication would be so much easier.
The coupling of the time to the position of the sun is rather arbitrary. In
earlier time one started to count the hours from sunrise, not from midnight.
So, what difference would it make to start your working day at 3 o'clock
instead of 8 o'clock if the sun is still at the same position?
