I wasn't familiar with the MonoDevelop name, but the top-level banner at

<https://developer.xamarin.com/releases/studio/xamarin.studio_6.3/xamarin.studio_6.3/>

says, "Visual Studio for Mac is replacing Xamarin Studio" and the
original announcement of Visual Studio for Mac from a couple of years
ago is here:

<https://docs.microsoft.com/en-us/previous-versions/mt790182(v=msdn.10)>

As I understand it the initial version was little more than a rebranding
of the acquired Xamarin Studio with some look and feel changes but they
are gradually bringing more features/languages over from the flagship
Windows IDE. This appears to be a description of what the latest can do:

<https://docs.microsoft.com/en-us/visualstudio/mac/?view=vsmac-2019>

About the only thing this has in common with Visual Studio Code is that
a lot of developers like to work on something other than Windows and
Microsoft recognizes that and has invested a ton in making it possible.
