Perhaps its one of perspective, but I don't think it's fair to
say they are completely different.

But to be fair, there are just enough breaking changes that
the work to be done and tested (for a large code base) can 
feel substantial.

Many of the python3 advocates continue to be surprised at
just how recalcitrant the python2 base is. I suspect
that's because those advocates are unfamiliar with the
pains of managing a large scale production facing code base
and the well placed fears that exist with deploying any
"big change".

RedHat appears to have other plans. Or at least is encouraging
one to migrate.
