I think that is an exaggeration.
Python 2 and Python 3 are not that different.
The problem is that they made some breaking changes.
Old code may no longer run.
Or worse old code will run but behave differently.
Fortran 77 to 90 was a way bigger language change but I believe
they did try and keep compatibility.
The only similar thing I can think of is K&R C to ANSI C
and stuff like =-.

I expect Python 2 live on for years to come.
