I don't see the big difference between yum, MSI and PCSI. If
I would have to rate them then I would probably say yum > MSI > PCSI.
But they are all using the same basic model: an advanced tool take
a kit and by magic get everything in the right places.
I used to be pretty impressed by that. But I no longer like
that model.
It does not scale well. It works great for 10-25 products. It does
not work well for hundreds or thousands of products.
Today my preference is the UNZIP install or XCOPY install.
You create a dir anywhere you want, you get the files there
and you run a setup and/or startup script and that is it.
No files scattered all over the system. No automatic changes
to any general setup/startup scripts.
Easy to delete.
Easy to have multiple versions in parallel.
Minimize risk of breaking something.
