One textbook I remember (I likely recall the 1st ed, rather than
the 2nd):

Baase, Sara. VAX-11 Assembly Language Programming. Englewood
Cliffs: Prentice Hall, 1992. ISBN 0139421521.

had a little macro library in an appendix designed to avoid students
having to deal with all of the details from the outset. It's probably
far from the only textbook with a similar sort of crutch.

If the Baase book has the right library, you could type it in from
the copy on archive.org:

https://archive.org/details/vax11assemblylan00baas

If it was another book, perhaps your memories can tell you which one.
Most of these books can be found used, if not in a library somewhere.
Some may even have (illicit?) pdf copies floating around the net,
though the Baase book doesn't have a trivially findable one.

A few possible textbooks:

  * Robert Sebesta - Vax Structured Assembly Language Programming
  * Edward Sowell - Programming in Assembly Language: Vax-11
  * James Brink and Richard Spillman - Computer Architecture and Vax
    Assembly Language Programming
  * Charles Kapps - Vax Assembly Language and Architecture
