Why? If you don't do it - what happens?

If you don't feel comfortable with C - then it's going to be 
hard to port something you can't read. Seems smarter to at 
least learn C.

You will be happier if you can first master C and TCP/IP on Linux
first, then have a go at migrating that to VMS.
