I am in a similar position (and age).  I code because I enjoy it, and C 
is such an UGLY language !

I've never used Pascal, but coded mainly in Fortran-77, a little Basic 
and in various assemblers and thoroughly enjoyed it.  I've written one 
program in C and hated it.  Go for it.  Life's too short.
