Yes, we have done that for several customers already.  We transform the code that accesses Rdb into code that accesses Oracle (or Postgres) with tools and the application is untouched.

The sites we have done have the Oracle database on another platform.  The response time will be impacted by the network, of course, however if you have a dedicated connection to the Oracle server, it works really well.
