The great thing about open source software is that anyone can freely change
it and distribute it. The horrible thing about it is that anyone can freely
change it and distribute it.

The thing about VMS was that it was closed, meaning that it was stable and
you wouldn't suddenly discover one day that in order to keep support you would
have to be using some systemd or gnome3 craziness. But, although closed,
actual support was available and source was available if you were willing to
pay for it. This is the best of all possible situations for companies
looking to run systems over a long term.
