We're increasingly dependent on open-source even within closed-source
environments, and there's little reason to think that trend will change.
VSI is heavily dependent on open-source for their VSI OpenVMS product, too.
Closed source shares many of the same issues as open source, and with a
more constrained set of maintainers.
There've been great maintainers and great stewards of closed-source
code. And there've been some atrocious ones. Same for open-source
code.
One of the major differences between closed- and open-licensed code is
one additional option for end-users, should the commercial provider
become... problematic.
As an example of this, I'd wager you weren't fond of the situation
after then-HP announced the end of OpenVMS, and that HPE is now
delivering on, right? Prior to VSI de-cloaking, that is.
