Please show me where VSI said anything about the academic world?

I do seem to recall reference to "VSI students" ....

And another thing.  A while back folks were claiming that VMS needed 
something like a Linux distribution, where one just loaded it and GO. 
Seems to me that this is a reasonable, if not perfect, answer to those 
arguments.  Remember them?

We can only support VSI and hope for the best.

For now, if this is indeed aimed at VSI training, sounds like something 
good to me.  "VSI training" also sounds good.
