It appears as if the Avanti systems (at least FreeAvanti) used EV6 CPU 
emulation regardless of the Alpha model configured.

CHARON-AXP is more picky :-)

When I configure it as an AlphaServer 400, the boot process just hangs 
(as expected with 8.4-2L2). When I reconfigure it as a DS10, it boots 
just fine from the "student disk".
