It sounds like you think unencrypted traffic within the machine room
is a thing of the past.

It is not.

Sure ssh has replaced telnet. But that is traffic coming into the
machine room.

If you try look at how application servers access database servers,
then you will find that unencrypted is still very common.

Having DECnet on systems within the machine room would not really
be that special.

Having DECnet traffic going in to and out from the machine room
would be a big no no.

But since not many modern network boxes are able to route DECnet, then
that may give itself.
