I should add that I would love to be totally wrong about this.  But if I'm remembering previous discussions correctly, this was a big complaint against the Integrity platform in the past.

I fully agree with that. From a vendor’s point of view it must have been a great idea. Now that these machines are run by hobbyists and computer musea it would certainly help if this id restriction got lifted.
Alpha spares are getting rare but if available they allow you to fix your property. No way to repair an itanium. The folks that take machines apart will very likely split the motherboard and its frontpanel board. Rendering both useless ....
