If you want to or need to run older versions and older apps in
isolation, have at.

But for not the first time, it is not possible to stay on older
software releases forever. Not for very much past the end of the app-
or product- or OS-specific long-term support. Not if there's to be
network connectivity and heterogeneous operations.

We are on a treadmill, and the treadmill is only going to accelerate.
Security patches and related updates are not going to slow down.

This also causes issues for vendors, as they're necessarily updating
their own development efforts, and they're tracking security issues and
patches and more general updates in their dependencies, and testing the
related bits.

Which further gets back to my comment around the need for APIs that
isolate some of the API differences that can arise here. Those APIs
not just for end-users, too.

Yes, this all heads toward SaaS and subscriptions and the "fun" of
continuous releases, too.

This is the world we're in, whether we want it or not.
