Absolutely.
For example, if the SHADOW_SERVER process does not start correctly on a system
with SHADOWING set to 2, the SHADOW_SERVER process will bugcheck. This is
a requirement of HBVS with Host-based minimerge (HBMM), which is V7.3-2 and beyond.
Prior to HBMM, the SHADOW_SERVER process was not required, and only was involved
in COPY and MERGE operations, so its presence was not needed for normal operation.
HBMM changed much of the SHDRIVER and its ACP interaction such that the
SHADOW_SERVER is much more involved, starting at the mounting of a shadow set.
