That depends on whether the part of the kernel you want to swap out
is part of a kernel module. On VMS, there's no such thing (at least
as far as end-users are concerned) but on Linux some parts of the
kernel functionality are implemented via modules.

On Linux, the modules are all kernel based, but if you are interested
in something which is a module, you could if you wish swap out the
Linux supplied version with your own replacement module.
