Thanks, everyone, for the pointers and background. I found some great discussions on VWS/UIS in this group and elsewhere, including some of the history @ the project and politics around it and X inside DEC back in the day. I'm currently running OpenVMS on my Alphastation 200, and am interested in trying to get VWS/UIS running on my VAXstation 3100 once I get it running again. Perhaps less painful would be bringing it up on the 9track.net Vaxstation emulator from: http://9track.net/simh/vax4xx/.

Media for VMS 5-ish may be hard to lay hands on of course; hoping that 7.x will still let me configure that option for back-compat.

Some other resources I dug up that may be interesting to the next person going down this route of technical nostagla:

Digital Technical Journal Vol 1 Issue 2 (March 1986) is devoted to the MicroVAX and has a chapter on UIS architecture and design philosophy, starting at p.56, "The Making of a MicroVAX Workstation" (http://www.bitsavers.org/pdf/dec/dtj/dtj_v01-02_mar1986.pdf)

Compare and contrast to the entire issue of the Digital Technical Journal devoted to DECwindows, Vol 2 Issue 3, Summer 1990 (http://www.bitsavers.org/pdf/dec/dtj/dtj_v02-03_1990.pdf
