First, you need to know whether the disk is physically OK.

I went through this again a while back.  The answer is somewhere here in 
the group.  I wrote it down for future reference.  If no answer is 
forthcoming, I'll try to reply on the weekend.

What consoloe possibilities (terminal, graphics monitor) do you have and 
which do you want to use?

Make sure that the battery is good so that it will remember non-default 
settings.
