So the terminal can be assumed to be ok, but you didn't answer the bit
about whether the VMS terminal settings are different on the systems. :-)

For example, 7-bit versus 8-bit output, different VT types, etc.

Try using C-Kermit or another emulator to capture the actual serial port
output and then look at it using a hex dump utility (hexdump -C on Linux
or a similar tool on your OS of choice).
