In the meantime VSI has clarified that in V9 mixed architecture clusters 
will only work for nodes running some version of VSI OpenVMS.

Presumably, this is due to changes and improvements (encryption was one 
of the topics mentioned at that time) in cluster communications which 
require a patch on pre-V9 systems. VSI can only create patches for VSI 
OpenVMS versions, not for e.g. HPE OpenVMS V8.4.
