PC's and printers are not going away. But the growth has stopped
(PC's due to other devices, printers due to less printing). And
the competition is tough in both PC's and printers so profit margins
are low.
So nu surprise that HP has problems.
But it is not a problem created by the split. A combined
HP+HPE would also be suffering.
No matter good or bad times an evaluation was made
whether a combined consumer and enterprise company or
two separate companies for consumer and enterprise
would do best. And they believed separate would do
best.
Not sure that they were right. But it is a tough call.
What is most important the synergies of combined or
the clear focus of separate.
