Autoconf et al aren't all that bad, except for being Unix-centric. Cmake is the better tool if you're looking for better portability, but it needs a descrip.mms generator. Unfortunately, it also requires a C++ version that just isn't there on VMS.

John Reagan, if you're around, didn't you say something about cross compiling to VMS object files with clang on Linux? Can't remember which thread that would have been in. If that's a possibility, perhaps that a way to see some early port of cmake...
