The BLISS code is not in error and will not be modified.  Although John provided
a workaround for the EDT issue, I'm going to wait for a newer compiler, because
there are too many instances of that coding style for me to make a lot of 
changes that will not be necessary once we have a newer compiler.
To be clear, the code in question is NOT either poor, unsafe, or otherwise
non-standard.

The code that's being modified is in the compiler tool chain, likely in the 
GEM-to-LLVM shim.
The application code in question will remain as is.
