Tom,

you don't need a CHARON expert to run/maintain OpenVMS running on a CHARON instance.

You need a CHARON expert to design, install and configure a new CHARON instance and migrate the OpenVMS system to the new CHARON instance. CHARON product problems would typically show up in this phase - if there are any left. But once you've successfully migrated your OpenVMS System to CHARON, you don't need to care about the running CHARON Emulator anymore - it just works.

If you want to just play with running OpenVMS on an emulator on your windows system, I would suggest using the 'ready-to-run' VSI Student Kit from VMSsoftware, see https://training.vmssoftware.com/hobbyist/. It contains a FreeAXP Alpha Emulator and an OpenVMS Alpha V8.4-2L2 System disk.

Volker.
