The example shown by vaxman was common in a lot of MACRO32 code I saw when the VAX to Alpha porting efforts were under way.  Having dealt with more customers than I can count accurately, these types of coding practices were seen everywhere.  While I agree that a code review was necessary and testing was done to verify that things were working as expected, homing the arguments did resolve most of them.  Some were a bit more complex and assumed a few things that were no longer valid in the Alpha context, but those were easily found and modified.

Addressing data alignment issues were perhaps the most challenging but those were mostly performance related not correctness.
