You've already gotten your answer, as was stated.
Commenting about this and about other user interface messes might drag
some of this forward.
Blithely accepting user interface design messes... won't.
Having to futz with I/O redirection for common operations is a hack.
And that this isn't in the REPLY documentation* is silly.
Blithely accepting incomplete documentation won't help the next person
that steps on this DCL OPCOM turd, either.
You've been working with OpenVMS decades, and you were not able to sort
this out.
What chance does a new user have?
It's not like this case doesn't arise on most any OpenVMS server**.
That is what I'm "ranting" about.
The future of the platform.
*An unfortunately common response to a UI design mess in general,
rather than actually fixing the UI mess.
**I don't expect to see automatic log-rolling mechanisms arise on
OpenVMS any time soon.
