Actually, dinosaurs were hugely successful.  If the history of the Earth 
were a year, something like modern humans have been around for about a 
couple of hours.  Dinosaurs were around for a couple of weeks a month 
ago or whatever.  There was nothing more complex than algae until late 
October.  There is no way dinosaurs could have adapted; they were wiped 
out by a comet hitting the Earth.  And what does it mean to adapt?  It 
means to change into something else.  :-|
