Note that the VSI Alpha kits only supports upgrades from HP 8.3 or 8.4.

When I upgraded to VSI 8.4-2L2 in 2017, we had been running HP 8.2
since 2006.

So I had to first upgrade to HP 8.4 to get a VSI-supported level.
Then upgrade to VSI 8.4-2L2.

This systems history:

VSI AXPVMS VMS V8.4-2L2 Oper System Install Sys 17-JUL-2017
VSI AXPVMS VMS V8.4 Oper System Remove - 17-JUL-2017
VSI AXPVMS VMS V8.4 Oper System Reg Product (U) 17-JUL-2017

DEC AXPVMS VMS V8.4 Oper System Install Sys 17-JUL-2017
DEC AXPVMS VMS V8.2 Oper System Remove - 17-JUL-2017
DEC AXPVMS VMS V8.2 Oper System Install 12-DEC-2006
DEC AXPVMS VMS V7.3-2 Oper System Remove 12-DEC-2006
DEC AXPVMS VMS V7.3-2 Oper System Install 12-DEC-2006
DEC AXPVMS VMS V7.2 Oper System Remove 12-DEC-2006
DEC AXPVMS VMS V7.2 Oper System Install 17-FEB-2000
DEC AXPVMS VMS V6.2 Oper System Remove 17-FEB-2000
DEC AXPVMS VMS V6.2 Oper System Install 27-DEC-1995
DEC AXPVMS VMS V6.1 Oper System Remove 27-DEC-1995
DEC AXPVMS VMS V6.1 Oper System Install 04-MAY-1994

Same system image, just copied around from internal disks to
StorageWorks cabinet and today to FC IBM SAN systems.

I guess that 1994 was when this site migrated from VAX to Alpha
and 6.1 was also the first production quality release for Alpha,
released in April-94, one month before the V6.1 install above.

So one of the first steps in the VSI upgrade is to "rebrand" the
"DEC AXPVMS VMS V8.4" to "VSI AXPVMS VMS V8.4", then replace it
with the VSI 8.4-2L2 version.

It also builds a new PCSI database, so the 3 lines above the gap
above is from current PROD SHO HIST, the lines below the gap is
from a saved "history" text file.

Impressive upgrade compatibility, if you ask me.

Rdb was also installed in 1994 and has been upgraded over the
years to the currently most current version. No issues at all.
