Having been through various app re-ports to OpenVMS, there've been some 
ports with a whole lot of OpenVMS code that's long been just extra 
baggage. Or porting for VAX. Etc.

LibreSSL sought to resolve memory management and other issues the BSD 
folks perceived in OpenSSL, and also then to provide a different and 
simpler interface with libtls.
